Nous en avons tous visit\u00e9s en compagnie de nos parents ou de nos grands-parents quand nous \u00e9tions petits. Voil\u00e0 bien des d\u00e9cennies que les enfants, mais aussi les adultes, sont fascin\u00e9s par les impressionnantes vitrines, v\u00e9ritables petites merveilles de merchandising visuel, et par le rayon jouets, \u00e9videmment\u00a0! L\u2019exploration du fabuleux \u00e9ventail de marques propos\u00e9 par les plus beaux grands magasins du monde est l\u2019exemple par excellence de la dimension ludique du retail. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e8re du num\u00e9rique, les grands magasins ne sont en aucun cas un vestige du pass\u00e9. Bien au contraire. Ils continuent d\u2019offrir une exp\u00e9rience de shopping passionnante et hautement qualitative \u00e0 des millions de gens.<br \/>\nLes shoppers raffolent des grands magasins, et nos lecteurs certainement aussi. Les grands magasins sont une \u00e9manation des \u2018passages\u2019, espaces commerciaux que l\u2019on trouvait aussi dans les villes du Benelux comme Rotterdam (Coolvest) et Bruxelles (les c\u00e9l\u00e8bres Galeries Saint-Hubert).<br \/>\n\u00c9mile Zola qualifia \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque les grands magasins de \u2018cath\u00e9drales des temps modernes\u2019. Et c\u2019est vrai que d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but, ces environnements merveilleux ont eu \u00e0 c\u0153ur d\u2019offrir aux shoppers une exp\u00e9rience d\u2019une incomparable sensualit\u00e9. On peut m\u00eame dire que les grands magasins pr\u00e9figuraient d\u00e8s la fin du 19<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle ce que Pine &amp; Gilmore d\u00e9criront beaucoup plus tard dans leur classique <em>\u2018The experience economy\u2019<\/em> (1998). L\u2019exp\u00e9rience n\u2019est-elle pas souvent pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e aujourd\u2019hui comme LA panac\u00e9e, seule capable de garantir l\u2019avenir du commerce physique\u00a0?<br \/>\nJadis, ces fabuleux temples du shopping regorgeant de nouveaut\u00e9s inspiraient la nouvelle classe moyenne dans un cadre architectural d\u2019une beaut\u00e9 \u00e0 couper le souffle. Ce que nous appelons aujourd\u2019hui la \u2018centricit\u00e9 client\u2019 allait d\u00e9j\u00e0 de soi dans les grands magasins de luxe.<\/p>\n<h2>Transformations majeures<\/h2>\n<p>Il va sans dire que les choses ont bien chang\u00e9 depuis l\u2019av\u00e8nement des grands magasins. On a vu la r\u00e9volution des supermarch\u00e9s et hypermarch\u00e9s promettant \u2018tout sous le m\u00eame toit\u2019\u00a0; l\u2019arriv\u00e9e de category killers tels que <strong>Mediamarkt<\/strong> ou <strong>Toys R Us<\/strong>\u00a0; la tendance \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9gration verticale, poussant certains grossistes de la mode comme Esprit et Benetton \u00e0 se doter de leurs propres structures retail\u00a0; le d\u00e9veloppement des centres commerciaux\u00a0; sans oublier l\u2019e-commerce et la r\u00e9volution omnicanal\u2026<br \/>\nDepuis les ann\u00e9es 70, les grands magasins ont par cons\u00e9quent connu des transformations majeures. Et cela continue aujourd\u2019hui. Pour survivre \u00e0 toutes ces \u00e9volutions disruptives, les grands magasins ont cherch\u00e9 leur salut dans diff\u00e9rentes solutions, allant du \u2018bon march\u00e9\u2019 (marques de distributeurs) au \u2018chic\u2019 (grand luxe, avec des possibilit\u00e9s pouss\u00e9es de shopping personnalis\u00e9), se limitant souvent aux chaussures, \u00e0 l\u2019habillement, \u00e0 la lingerie, aux parfums et \u00e0 la maison au d\u00e9triment d\u2019autres cat\u00e9gories. Mais <strong>Zalando <\/strong>et de fantastiques concepts d\u2019e-commerce comme <strong>Mytheresa.com<\/strong> leur donnent du fil \u00e0 retordre.<\/p>\n<h2>Attrait touristique<\/h2>\n<p>Il semble bien que la solution se trouve dans le segment du luxe premium, lequel parvient \u00e0 conjuguer environnement d\u2019exception et service client hautement personnalis\u00e9. L\u2019avenir de ces \u2018cath\u00e9drales du shopping\u2019 n\u2019est toutefois assur\u00e9 que dans les grandes m\u00e9tropoles mondiales en raison de leur attrait touristique. Pensez \u00e0 <strong>Harrods<\/strong> et <strong>Selfridges<\/strong> \u00e0 Londres, \u00e0 <strong>KaDeWe<\/strong> \u00e0 Berlin, aux <strong>Galeries Lafayette<\/strong> \u00e0 Paris, au <strong>Corte Ingl\u00e9s<\/strong> \u00e0 Madrid, etc. Ailleurs, elles font probablement face \u00e0 une \u2018mission impossible\u2019. L\u2019exception pourrait venir de ce que les Allemands appellent si joliment le <em>\u2018Platzhirsch\u2019<\/em>, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire un grand magasin historique ayant localement pignon sur rue et faisant partie int\u00e9grante du pass\u00e9 et du futur de la majorit\u00e9 des habitants. <strong>L&amp;T<\/strong> (Lengermann &amp; Trieschmann) \u00e0 Osnabr\u00fcck est un excellent exemple, et il en existe encore d\u2019autres en Europe.<br \/>\n\u00ab\u00a0Personnellement, j\u2019aime la plupart des grands magasins, un peu comme un amateur de chiens appr\u00e9cie aussi bien les chiens de race que les b\u00e2tards\u00a0\u00bb, d\u00e9clare Erik Van Heuven. \u00ab\u00a0La principale raison en est que chaque grand magasin fait partie de l\u2019ADN de sa communaut\u00e9 locale, en d\u00e9pit de l\u2019internationalisation et de la mondialisation. Chaque grand magasin est charg\u00e9 d\u2019histoire. Lorsqu\u2019un tel monument est contraint de fermer ses portes suite \u00e0 une restructuration ou \u00e0 une faillite, cela cr\u00e9e un \u00e9norme vide dans le paysage commercial et s\u2019av\u00e8re tr\u00e8s douloureux pour de nombreux consommateurs qui gardent de bons souvenirs de leurs visites en compagnie de leurs enfants, de leurs parents ou de leurs grands-parents. J\u2019en ai moi-m\u00eame fait l\u2019exp\u00e9rience\u00a0: depuis la signature de mon premier contrat de travail avec <strong>Le Grand Bazar-Innovation-Bon March\u00e9<\/strong> il y a une trentaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es de cela, mon amour des grands magasins n\u2019a cess\u00e9 de cro\u00eetre. J\u2019aimerais aujourd\u2019hui partager cette passion avec nos lecteurs \u00e0 travers une s\u00e9rie d\u2019entretiens conduits avec les leaders europ\u00e9ens du secteur, lesquels seront \u00e0 terme compil\u00e9s dans un ouvrage intitul\u00e9 <em>\u2018A Love for Department Stores\u2019<\/em>. J\u2019ai h\u00e2te\u00a0!\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<h2>\u00c0 propos d\u2019Erik Van Heuven<\/h2>\n<p>Au cours de sa carri\u00e8re, l\u2019entrepreneur flamand et expert international du retail Erik Van Heuven (56) a \u00e9t\u00e9 un t\u00e9moin privil\u00e9gi\u00e9 des profonds changements qui ont boulevers\u00e9 le secteur des grands magasins au Benelux et en Allemagne.<br \/>\nIl a d\u00e9but\u00e9 sa carri\u00e8re chez GIB Group (\u2018Grand Bazar &#8211; Innovation &#8211; Bon March\u00e9\u2019) avant de devenir le CEO et l\u2019administrateur de <strong>Galeria Inno<\/strong> et de l\u2019entreprise allemande de chaussures <strong>HR Group<\/strong>. Durant la derni\u00e8re d\u00e9cennie, il a essentiellement travaill\u00e9 en Allemagne, entre autres chez <strong>Karstadt<\/strong>. Ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, il a eu l\u2019occasion de constater \u00e0 quel point les fonds internationaux de capital-risque ont transform\u00e9 le secteur.<br \/>\nSouvenez-vous du rachat d\u2019Inno par <strong>Kaufhof<\/strong>, alors membre de <strong>Metro Group<\/strong> Germany. Ou encore de la reprise de Karstadt Kompakt par les investisseurs <strong>Dawnay Day<\/strong> et <strong>Hilco Capital<\/strong> UK. De la relance de Karstadt par <strong>Berggruen Holdings<\/strong> US. Du rachat de <strong>V&amp;D<\/strong> par <strong>SUN Capital<\/strong> \u00e0 <strong>KKR<\/strong>. Et plus tard, de la reprise de Karstadt par <strong>Signa Holding<\/strong>, Autriche, et de l\u2019acquisition de Kaufhof par <strong>Hudson\u2019s Bay<\/strong>.<br \/>\nErik conna\u00eet personnellement la plupart des acteurs cl\u00e9s du secteur et leur donnera voix au chapitre \u00e0 travers notre s\u00e9rie d\u2019articles.
